EU chief to meet Trump in Scotland in push to secure a US trade deal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Scotland on Sunday, July 27, 2025, to negotiate a trade deal and avoid a transatlantic trade war. The talks aim to secure a framework agreement before an August 1 deadline, when Trump has threatened to impose a 30% tariff on EU imports. A potential deal could involve a 15% baseline tariff on EU goods, with exemptions for sectors like aircraft, steel, lumber, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture, though steel faces a 50% tariff above certain quotas. Trump has described the chances of reaching an agreement as “50-50,” citing unresolved issues. The EU is prepared to retaliate with tariffs on $109 billion of U.S. goods if no deal is reached. The meeting follows recent U.S. trade agreements with the UK and Japan, which set 10% and 15% baseline tariffs, respectively.
