The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced urgent palliative repairs on several deteriorating bridges along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, focusing on critical points such as Kara, Arepo, and Magboro bridges. Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, highlighted the need for immediate action following a recent accident at Arepo bus stop on May 23, 2025, where a structural failure in an expansion joint caused serious injuries.
The repairs, set to begin immediately, will address failing expansion joints showing visible signs of distress. A contractor already engaged on the expressway has been instructed to start palliative maintenance this weekend as an interim measure, while approvals for comprehensive rehabilitation are processed. Earlier inspections in May 2025 by Minister of Works David Umahi also identified severe structural issues in bridges like Lotto, Ogere, Sapade, and Alapako, with the latter being closed due to significant risks from rusted reinforcements and truck collisions.
