Lagos govt postpones closure of PWD rail crossing to May 14

The Lagos State Government has postponed the permanent closure of the Public Works Department (PWD) rail crossing to vehicular traffic from May 1 to May 14, 2025, to allow more time for public sensitization and implementation. This decision, announced by Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi, aims to enhance commuter and motorist safety due to frequent collisions between trains and vehicles at the crossing, particularly those heading toward Ikeja and Maryland, which have caused fatalities and injuries. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes via Ikeja or Airport roads, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers will be deployed to manage traffic and minimize inconvenience. The closure follows a safety assessment prompted by the Red Line Train Service’s operations, which began passenger services in October 2024. As of May 2, 2025, vehicles were still moving freely through the crossing.
