There has been little debate over the use of radio frequency identification tags to be used on humans or to prevent illegal aliens from crossing our borders. One of the ideas is to use the RFID tags that they have to use in conjunction with the biometric cards that every person coming to the border has to carry with them at all times to be seen.
You probably didn’t know but 23 million visitors come to the United States every year and that number is growing. There are 15 million visitors from Mexico and Canada each year, and officials want to know who is coming to our country and why. They also want to make sure that people who have visas or passes don’t overstay their journey, and if they do, they want them to check back in and re-extend their journey. Sign up.
RFID tags will not only be used to prevent legal and illegal from entering the country but also to prevent human trafficking and drugs. More than seven million cargo containers come into our country every year and we can’t check all of them, but with RFID tags we can. Recently we have installed special scanning machines to look inside these cargo containers, but sometimes even this is not enough.
Some security officials at the Department of Homeland Security suggested that perhaps these RFID tags would help us track everyone who comes into our country. But immigration law professors, as well as constitutional lawyers, think the plan is overkill. So, this is the latest in the world of immigration law and RFID tags.
