Look At Those Hills – Should Chase Vehicles In The Tour de…

Recently, Tesla autos had the highest score in NHTSA tests, almost a perfect crash test score. How is this for an all-electric car you ask? Well, I was somewhat taken aback, I didn’t really expect it as electric cars are usually heavy due to the battery underneath, and thus, they have to try and make the rest of the car as light as possible to maintain performance , so how did they do it? Well, modern materials definitely help, although they also add cost. Clearly, Tesla not only has it going for it, but also some pretty cool engineering.

Nevertheless, crash tests are only one important issue with automobiles today, perhaps not even the most important one for all consumers. Fuel advantage. But, aren’t both going for them, like electric cars? Yes, indeed they do, but then there’s that problem with range. Now again, the other day some of the cyclists in our think tank were reflecting on the challenges they face during long distance bike rides on heavily traveled roads or in large metro areas, namely smog and car fumes, boy that ain’t exactly healthy Yes, not even a fraction.

What about the Tour de France with all those human cyclists with all those cars, motorcycles and the like breathing to full capacity with big lungs – not a healthy sight. Shouldn’t they be using electric cars and motorcycles for chasing cars, team cars and media cars? I believe so. Of course if such a mandate was made, then what? Those all-electric cars will need to be charged every night, and if they don’t get a full charge, they’ll be parked on the side of the road, not chasing the peloton.

As long as you don’t ask them to go up steep grades and very long distances, a good number of electric cars are fine. But really, isn’t it that the Tour de France is designed to test the human will, spirit, perseverance and try to break the riders, the defeated into submission for so many grueling stages until a winner emerges? In that case, those same hills would break the backs of most electric cars today, they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Tour’s elite human cyclists, but maybe a car company could make that work.

If I were a betting man, and you don’t mind, I’d bet on Tesla’s latest sedan making the grade and competing with the world’s best human cyclists – how about you – please on all of this Ponder and ponder over it.
