Reflecting on Disrespect: Mickie James Recalls Infamous WWE “Trash Bag” Incident in Recent Interview
In a candid new interview on Chris Van Vliet’s Insight podcast, released January 3, 2026, wrestling legend Mickie James revisited the notorious 2021 incident where WWE returned her personal belongings in a black trash bag following her release. The six-time Women’s Champion explained she was less offended than fans at the time, having become “numb” to disappointments in the industry—but revealed it wasn’t her first experience with such treatment.
James shared: “I wasn’t as offended as the fans were when it happened, because I don’t think you realize how many times we’ve been offended. I’m so numb to getting my feelings hurt… I remember in 2010 when I got my stuff back, I got it in the same way, and 2010 me was devastated. 2010 me was like, ‘Oh my God, they think I’m trash, they hate me, like they’re throwing me out with the trash.'”
By 2021—her second WWE release—James viewed it differently: “This time, I didn’t take it personal. I’m like, of course. It’s more about the lack of thought of how you’re so disposable.” She posted the photo sarcastically, receiving two boxes with trash bags inside, and still keeps them as “receipts.”
The viral backlash led to swift action: WWE fired Talent Relations head Mark Carrano (whom James said was always good to her and felt bad about), with apologies from executives like Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, John Laurinaitis, Nick Khan, and even a personal call from Vince McMahon assuring her it didn’t reflect his view of her talent.
James believes the incident ended the practice: “I don’t think anybody else will get their stuff that way anymore… I don’t think they come in Gucci bags, but they certainly don’t come in hefty bags.”
For U.S. wrestling fans, this reflection from Mickie James on the trash bag dismissal highlights evolving respect in WWE post-2021, amid her TNA Hall of Fame induction and ambassador role. Her resilience underscores the tough skin needed in pro wrestling.
Mickie James’ latest recall of the WWE belongings trash bag saga shows growth from heartbreak to sarcasm—proving her enduring class in the business.
