Ever since the first steam-engined motorcycle appeared in 1867, motorcycles have held a certain mystique. Basically, a bike is a piece of metal and some other material on two wheels. Yet many people shy away from even the simplest maintenance, thinking it is beyond them.
Who knew the basics in an owner’s manual could teach us as much about ourselves as they do about the bike? I don’t understand all the mechanical, technical and electrical intricacies of my bike. However, I know that even a little knowledge destroys it.
Getting started is simple. In addition to your increased security and reduced costs, here’s what you’ll get:
- You have equipment. Aside from a tire pressure gauge, the tools that came with your bike are all you need to get started.
- The basics are easy. Get out your owner’s manual and try it. Start with the regular things; Checking tires for wear, air pressure, oil level, chain tension and lubrication (if you have chain drive). Your bike will not only perform better and last longer, but it’s also safer.
- You can do more than you realize. Even small successes create confidence. Accomplishing something you thought was beyond your reach sets you up for the next challenge. We learn that we are capable of much more than we give ourselves credit for and we are encouraged to try new things.
- You are a very confident rider. Without understanding, you don’t know what you don’t know. So, you hit the road and you have no idea what could go wrong, nor will you be prepared for it. If you check your bike regularly, you know it’s in good condition and it’s unlikely to let you down. You can spot potential problems before they get out of hand.
- Self-discovery. You don’t know you can do something like this until you do it. Too many people give up before they even start or even get close to success because they tell themselves it can’t be done. Or they’ve been told they can’t do it. Think about the message that is going on in your subconscious.
- more awareness. You know it’s done and it’s done right. Just doing it helps you understand how it works. Then you don’t feel like you’re at the mercy of a well-intentioned but misinformed or unscrupulous mechanic.
Learning Maintenance 101 builds confidence, awareness, and independence. It enhances enjoyment, safety, performance and longevity of the motorcycle. It reduces cost.
Before you head out on your next ride, take a moment to learn something new about your bike. You’d be amazed how powerful it is!
