New York City to DC bracing for dangerous flooding: Latest forecast

The Interstate 95 corridor from New York City to Washington, D.C., is under threat of dangerous flooding today, July 31, 2025. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the region, with a Level 3 out of 4 risk for flash flooding from D.C. to New York City. Heavy storms are expected to bring rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour, with widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches and isolated areas potentially seeing 5 to 8 inches. The most severe flooding is forecast from D.C. to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and northern New Jersey, with storms likely starting around 1 p.m. and peaking during the late afternoon rush hour, continuing into the evening. Damaging winds and some hail are also possible. New York City has issued a travel advisory for Thursday and Friday, urging residents to avoid driving through flooded areas and follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” guideline. Urban areas, underpasses, and low-lying spots along creeks and streams are particularly vulnerable.
