Five Soldiers Injured in Shooting at Fort Stewart Army Base, Suspect in Custody

Hinesville, GA – Five U.S. Army soldiers were injured in a shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in what authorities described as an active shooter incident. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:56 a.m. EST in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah. The suspect, identified as a male soldier, was apprehended by law enforcement at 11:35 a.m., and officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The injured soldiers were treated on-site by emergency personnel and transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. Two of the victims were transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center in Savannah, though the extent of their injuries remains undisclosed. No fatalities have been reported.

Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m., with personnel instructed to secure all windows and doors. The lockdown was lifted for the main cantonment area by 12:10 p.m., but the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area remains closed as the Army Criminal Investigation Division, supported by the FBI’s Savannah office, continues its investigation.

The incident prompted a swift response from local and federal authorities, with the Hinesville Police Department and Georgia State Patrol assisting in securing the perimeter. Nearby Liberty County schools, including Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School, were placed on soft lockdown out of caution, as was the Appling County School System, though these measures have since been lifted. Fort Stewart’s three Department of Defense Education Activity schools, serving nearly 1,400 students, were also locked down but reported no immediate threat.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, stating on X, “As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.” Similar sentiments were shared by Senator Raphael Warnock, Representative Buddy Carter, and other Georgia lawmakers. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have been briefed, with the White House actively monitoring the situation.

The motive for the shooting and the identity of the suspect have not been released, with officials citing the ongoing investigation. This marks the second shooting in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area in recent years, following the 2022 killing of Sgt. Nathan Hillman by a fellow soldier, a case still pending.

Fort Stewart, home to the 3rd Infantry Division and approximately 15,000 active-duty soldiers, 16,000 family members, and thousands of civilian employees, remains a critical military hub. The Army has urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement as the investigation continues.
