August 2025 Mid-Size SUV Sales: Mahindra Still Tops, But Tata’s Harrier Steals the Show

Hey folks, if you’re shopping for a mid-size SUV, August 2025 wasn’t exactly a banner month. Most models took a hit in sales compared to last year and even last month, thanks in part to that new GST tweak kicking in mid-September—dropping the tax rate to a flat 40% from the old 45-50% mess. It might shake things up soon, but for now, the numbers tell a story of caution.

Overall, the mid-size SUV crowd (think 4.4 to 4.7 meters) moved just 23,413 units last month. That’s a rough 22% drop from 30,035 in August 2024—wiping out over 6,600 sales. Month-over-month? Another slide, down 19% from July’s 28,960 units. Ouch.

Mahindra held strong at the top, though. Their Scorpio-N led with 9,840 units, grabbing 42% of the pie despite a 29% year-over-year dip from 13,787 and a similar monthly fall from 13,747. Right behind, the XUV700 clocked 4,956 sales—21% market share—but it tumbled 45% year-over-year and 30% from July. Tough sledding for the champ.

Tata bucked the trend with the Harrier, hitting 3,087 units. That’s a solid 63% jump from last August’s 1,892 and 39% better than July’s 2,216. Their EV newbie, the XEV 9e, came in fourth at 2,313—down just 6% monthly from 2,462, but already outpacing others with nearly 10% share.

The Safari managed 1,489 units, off 24% year-over-year but up 20% from July’s 1,242. Hyundai’s Alcazar edged up 7% to 1,187 annually, though it slipped 16% monthly.

Down in the sub-500 club, MG’s Hector/Plus limped to 379 units—a brutal 79% year-over-year plunge from 1,814 and 35% off July. Jeep Compass? Just 97, down 65% yearly. Tucson (57) and Tiguan (8) weren’t far behind in the doldrums, and Citroen’s C5 Aircross? Zero.

Buyers might be waiting for those GST perks to hit. What’s your take—holding out or jumping in now? (298 words)
