Shai Agassi, a former president of the Product and Technology Group (PTG) at SAP AG, is behind the incredible vision of the Better Place company, which is leading the race for electric cars. With a system of both recharging and battery changing stations (designed to automatically take out your old battery and install a new one in a matter of minutes), Better Place aims to make recharging your electric car A quick and easy way is to make one. Best of all, Agassi plans to let you drive your electric car almost for free, allowing the company to profit from recharging and replacing the batteries. The concept is similar to what many mobile phone service providers offer- a phone that is almost free, as long as you are paying them for your calls.
So where does this incredible idea stand at the moment? Better Place has signed contracts to deploy its systems in several US states as well as Australia, Ontario and Israel, and is reported to have interest from over 25 territories and countries. Renault-Nissan has already agreed to manufacture the cars, and has delivered a prototype based on the Renault Mégane.
Earlier this year Better Place demonstrated the capabilities of its battery replacement stations to the Japanese Ministry of the Environment with amazing results. The station, which is set up in close resemblance to gas stations, managed to remove the old battery from the test car and insert a new and fully recharged battery in less than two minutes. Two minutes! That’s less than the time it takes to fill up an average sedan’s tank at a regular gas station.
We can only hope that Better Place continues to work on this great idea, and make such outstanding progress in making our world a truly better place.
