Ex-Railway Employee Attacks CBI Officer with Bow and Arrow in Lucknow
In a shocking incident on Friday morning, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer was attacked with a bow and arrow outside the agency’s office in Lucknow’s Hazratganj area. The assailant, identified as Dinesh Murmu, a 65-year-old former railway gangman from Munger, Bihar, allegedly carried out the attack in retaliation for a corruption probe he was subjected to in 1993, in which the CBI officer had played a role.
At approximately 11:15 AM, Murmu approached the CBI office on Naval Kishore Road, concealed behind a tree. He then emerged and shot a handmade iron-tipped arrow from a wooden bow, striking Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Virendra Singh in the chest. Singh, aged 55, was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the injury was about five centimeters deep. Fortunately, the wound did not damage any vital organs, and Singh is reported to be in stable condition citeturn0news12.
Murmu was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the Hazratganj police. He has been charged with attempted murder and assault on a public servant. Police investigations revealed that Murmu had been dismissed from the Indian Railways following a 1993 CBI investigation into a corruption case, which Singh had been involved in. This incident underscores the potential risks faced by officials involved in long-standing investigations.
The CBI has initiated its own inquiry to determine if Singh had received any threats or if there was any prior surveillance leading up to the attack. Authorities are also examining whether Murmu had been practicing with traditional weapons in remote areas, as suggested by preliminary reports citeturn0news12.
This attack highlights the enduring consequences of exposing corruption and the lengths to which some individuals may go to seek retribution. The CBI and local police are continuing their investigations to ensure justice is served.
