Delta State IGR Surges from N83 Billion to N158 Billion Between 2023 and 2024 – Gov. Oborevwori

Asaba, May 29, 2024 – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced a significant increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which rose from N83 billion in 2023 to N158 billion in 2024.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Government House in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori attributed the remarkable growth to improved tax administration, enhanced revenue collection strategies, and the blocking of leakages in the state’s financial system.

Key Drivers of the Revenue Growth

The governor highlighted several measures that contributed to the sharp rise in IGR, including:

  • Automation of Revenue Collection: The introduction of digital platforms to streamline tax payments and reduce fraud.
  • Expansion of the Tax Base: Efforts to bring more businesses and individuals into the tax net.
  • Strict Enforcement Against Tax Evasion: Increased monitoring and compliance checks to ensure all due revenues are collected.
  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Collaboration with private sector stakeholders to boost economic activities and revenue generation.

Economic Implications

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the increase in IGR would enable the state to fund critical infrastructure projects, improve social services, and reduce reliance on federal allocations.

“This achievement reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility and sustainable development. With more funds at our disposal, we can accelerate the completion of ongoing projects and initiate new ones that will benefit all Deltans,” he stated.

Future Plans

The governor assured residents that the state government would continue to strengthen its revenue mechanisms while ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds. He also urged citizens to fulfill their tax obligations promptly to support the state’s development agenda.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Economic analysts and business leaders in Delta State have praised the revenue growth, noting that it signals improved economic management. However, some civil society groups have called for greater transparency in revenue expenditure to ensure that the funds directly impact grassroots development.

With this impressive leap in IGR, Delta State solidifies its position as one of Nigeria’s leading states in revenue generation, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
