Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has credited the club’s turnaround under interim manager Michael Carrick to four specific tactical and personnel shifts. Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January 2026, Carrick has guided United to third in the Premier League, winning seven of his first ten matches.
In a recent interview with Men in Blazers (April 10, 2026), Fernandes revealed the following four changes:
1. A Change in Formation
Carrick moved away from the tactical setup used by Ruben Amorim, implementing a new system that Fernandes says has made the team “more compact.” While Amorim often favored a back three, Carrick’s shift has allowed United to better manage games, especially when they need to “suffer” and defend deep against top opposition.
2. Tweaking Player Positions
Fernandes highlighted that Carrick has moved several players into roles that better suit their strengths. This has had a direct impact on Fernandes himself, who has flourished in a more advanced position, recording 8 goals and 16 assists so far this season.
3. Rotating the Starting Lineup
The interim boss has not been afraid to change the personnel. One of the most notable moves mentioned by Fernandes was the reintegration of Kobbie Mainoo into the starting XI, providing the midfield with the balance and control it lacked during the first half of the season.
4. A Newfound “Knack” for Scoring
Fernandes noted that while the team created many chances under Amorim, they were failing to finish them. Under Carrick, United have become significantly more clinical.
“In terms of creation and chances, we were there at the top when Ruben was here, but we were not finishing that… we have started to score goals now.”
