Early life
Gama Pehlwan was born in 1878, in a village called Dabwali, in the Punjab province of British India. His father’s name was Haji Muhammad Ahsan and his mother’s name was Zahida Khatoon. He had two brothers, Ghulam Mohammad and Ghulam Rasool, and two sisters, Zainab Bibi and Zahida Bibi. Gama’s grandfather, Haji Muhammad Mansha, was a famous wrestler in his village.
Professional wrestling career
Gama Pehlwan was born in Amritsar, Punjab, British India in 1896. He began his professional wrestling career in India in 1911. He quickly rose to prominence, winning the Indian Championship in 1912. He held the title for seven years before losing it to Tiger Jogendra Singh in 1919. Gama Pehlwan then moved to the United States, where he competed on the vaudeville circuit. In 1928, he won the World Light Heavyweight Championship, becoming the first Asian wrestler to do so. He held the title for four years before losing it to Jim Londos in 1932. Gama Pehlwan returned to India in 1934 and won the Indian Championship for a second time. He retired from professional wrestling in 1938.
