Gattuso Nuovo CT of the Italian national team: now it is official

Gennaro Gattuso has been officially named the new head coach (Commissario Tecnico, CT) of the Italian national football team, succeeding Luciano Spalletti, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on June 15, 2025. The announcement follows days of speculation after Spalletti’s sacking due to a 3-0 loss to Norway, which jeopardized Italy’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes. Gattuso, a 2006 World Cup champion with Italy, was unveiled as the choice to lead the Azzurri, with his presentation scheduled for June 19 at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome.

The FIGC’s decision, backed by president Gabriele Gravina and delegation head Gianluigi Buffon, emphasizes Gattuso’s deep connection to the national team, described as a “second skin” for the 47-year-old Calabrian. His appointment is part of a broader “Azzurri per l’Azzurro” project, aiming to restore pride and identity to the team. Cesare Prandelli will serve as technical director, overseeing youth teams, while former 2006 teammates Leonardo Bonucci, Gianluca Zambrotta, and possibly Andrea Barzagli join the staff to foster a sense of belonging.

Gattuso’s coaching record includes stints at Milan, Napoli (where he won the 2019-20 Coppa Italia), Valencia, Marseille, and most recently Hajduk Split, where he finished third in the Croatian league. Despite mixed results, his grit and passion—nicknamed “Ringhio” (Snarl)—align with the FIGC’s goal of rebuilding a resilient squad. He faces the immediate challenge of securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup, with crucial matches against Estonia and Israel in September 2025. Posts on X reflect fan enthusiasm, highlighting Gattuso’s tenacity as key to reviving Italy’s fortunes.
