“On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave me seven swans swimming, six geese a laying, five gold rings, four collie birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a pheasant in a pear tree.”
After a rough few days I decided to get away from it all with a trip to the lake. I know it’s December and cold, but I might as well just relax and see if any fish are biting. I loaded up the boat and headed towards the lake ready to enjoy my free time. It was a great day when my true love gave me seven swans on the lake and we let them swim and enjoy the view together with us.
Anyone who’s ever been on a lake knows how fun and relaxing it can be, just make sure you’re properly covered. If your boat is anything larger than a rowboat, you should consider watercraft coverage. Watercraft coverage is easy to buy and it is relatively inexpensive.
There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing insurance for your boat. Make sure you opt for fuel spill liability and debris removal coverage. I know this is not something that anyone wants to happen on a lake, but in the event of an accident, and if that accident causes your boat to sink, you will be responsible for getting the boat to the bottom of the lake. It is not right to leave it like this. There will be a fine for trying. Furthermore, you are responsible for all the fuel and oil that has now contaminated the lake. Cleanup can be expensive, especially if the lake is very deep, and that’s why you want to make sure your insurance will cover the cost.
I won’t be waterskiing today, but water sports liability coverage is something I always make sure to include in my policy.
Another valuable coverage that can really set your mind at ease is on-water towing. Breaking down on the water is not the same as breaking down on the side of the road. Getting stuck in the middle of the lake is no big deal. Good to know you have coverage for the cost of towing back to the marina. That fun day at the lake may not have turned out the way you’d like it to, but it certainly could have been a lot worse.
Call your insurance agent if you have any questions.
