Iran Seeks Indirect Talks with US, Warns Regional Countries Against Strikes

Tehran, April 6, 2025 – Iran has expressed willingness to engage in indirect negotiations with the United States but issued a stern warning to neighboring countries against supporting or allowing strikes on its territory. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military confrontations and stalled nuclear talks.

Iran Open to Diplomacy, but on Its Terms

A senior Iranian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Tehran is prepared to resume backchannel discussions with Washington, likely mediated by a third party. The potential talks would focus on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) and addressing regional security concerns.

“We have always believed in diplomacy, but any negotiations must respect Iran’s sovereignty and interests,” the official stated. The Biden administration has yet to respond publicly, but US officials have previously emphasized the need for “verifiable steps” from Iran to de-escalate tensions.

Warning to Regional Allies

In a separate statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry cautioned neighboring countries against permitting their territories to be used for attacks against the Islamic Republic. The warning follows reports that some Gulf states have allowed US and Israeli military operations targeting Iranian-linked groups.

“Any country that becomes a platform for aggression against Iran will face severe consequences,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said. He did not name specific nations, but the message appeared directed at countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Azerbaijan, which have strengthened security ties with the US and Israel.

Escalating Tensions

The statement comes after a series of covert strikes on Iranian military sites and nuclear facilities, which Tehran has blamed on Israel with alleged US backing. Last month, an explosion at a key military base near Isfahan raised suspicions of foreign sabotage.

Analysts suggest Iran’s dual approach—offering talks while issuing threats—reflects its strategy to avoid direct conflict while deterring adversaries. “Tehran is trying to balance diplomacy with deterrence,” said Ali Vaez, Iran Project Director at the International Crisis Group. “It wants to avoid war but won’t tolerate attacks on its soil.”

What’s Next?

If indirect talks proceed, Oman or Qatar could serve as mediators, as they have in past negotiations. However, with US-Iran relations at a fragile stage and regional tensions high, the path to diplomacy remains uncertain.

For now, Iran’s message is clear: it is open to dialogue but prepared to retaliate if provoked. The coming weeks will test whether diplomacy can prevail over escalating hostilities in the Middle East.
