Jaguar to relaunch with electric luxury sedan within months

Jaguar’s ‘Hail Mary’ Electric Gamble: 735kW Luxury Sedan to Launch September 2026 in Make-or-Break Brand Reset

Jaguar is placing a massive bet on its own survival — a 735kW, three-motor electric luxury sedan launching in September 2026 that the struggling British brand hopes will transform it from a BMW competitor into a genuine rival for Porsche and Bentley, marking the most dramatic “complete reset” in automotive history.

The hallowed British marque has confirmed the timeline for its all-new lineup, which will kick off with an all-new luxury electric sedan based on the dramatic two-door Type 00 concept unveiled in December 2024. While production details remain scarce, the company has revealed staggering performance figures that would put the sedan in hypercar territory.

The Numbers That Could Save Jaguar

According to Jaguar, the production model will produce a breathtaking 735kW of power and 1300Nm of torque from three electric motors. That is roughly 985 horsepower — more than a Lamborghini Revuelto and comparable to a Rimac Nevera, but in a four-door grand tourer format.

The car will feature all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a massive 120kWh battery reportedly good for 692km (430 miles) of driving range. Those figures would make it one of the most powerful and longest-range electric vehicles on the market — if Jaguar can deliver on its promises.

The company says its engineering team drove iconic models from the company’s past for inspiration, with the new model being influenced by the E-TypeXJS, and XJ series — three of the most celebrated grand tourers in automotive history.

“Right from the start, our aim was to deliver a true Jaguar,” said Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover. “To do that, we wanted to re-examine the provenance of the brand and the best way to achieve this was to drive some of our greatest models from the past 90 years. It provided clear direction to help us create the most technically advanced Jaguar ever made.”

The ‘Complete Reset’ That Angered Fans

Jaguar has previously said it was undertaking a “complete reset” of the brand, but the initial rollout faced widespread criticism. In late 2024, the company released a video showcasing its new brand direction — featuring androgynous models, bright pink lighting, and no cars — that was widely mocked on social media.

Traditional Jaguar fans accused the company of abandoning its heritage. Critics questioned why a luxury car brand would launch a new identity without showing any cars. The backlash was swift and brutal, with some calling it a “marketing disaster.”

Compounding the uncertainty, reports in 2024 claimed Jaguar’s design boss Gerry McGovern had been fired — a rumor later confirmed as untrue. However, McGovern recently announced he would be leaving the company to start his own design firm, raising questions about who will guide Jaguar’s design language through this critical transition.

From BMW to Bentley: Jaguar’s New Ambition

Perhaps the most significant change is strategic. As part of its reset, Jaguar will no longer aim to compete with the likes of BMW and Audi. The company will instead reposition itself as a more upmarket alternative to Porsche and Bentley — a dramatic shift that moves Jaguar away from the volume luxury segment and into the exclusive world of high-margin, low-volume grand tourers.

This is a high-risk, high-reward strategy. BMW and Audi sell hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually in the luxury sedan segment. Porsche and Bentley sell far fewer cars but command much higher prices and profit margins per vehicle. Jaguar is essentially betting that it can skip being a mass-premium brand and leap directly into the ultra-luxury space.

The question is whether customers will follow. Jaguar’s brand equity has eroded over the past decade due to reliability concerns, dated models, and a lack of investment. Convincing buyers to spend Porsche-level money on an untested electric Jaguar is a monumental challenge.

The September 2026 Launch Timeline

The September 2026 launch date gives Jaguar approximately 18 months to finalize production specifications, complete testing, and prepare a global launch campaign. That timeline is aggressive for an all-new platform with entirely new powertrain technology.

The sedan will be the first of several new Jaguar models built on the company’s new electric architecture. Jaguar has confirmed that the lineup will eventually include multiple body styles, but the company has not disclosed whether a traditional SUV — the segment that currently drives most luxury sales — is planned.

What This Means for U.S. Buyers

For American consumers, Jaguar’s relaunch matters because the U.S. is the largest luxury car market in the world. If Jaguar succeeds, American buyers will have a new alternative to the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, and Mercedes-Benz EQS.

If Jaguar fails, the brand may not survive. Jaguar’s parent company, Tata Motors, has invested billions in the electric transition. There is no Plan B. The September 2026 sedan is genuinely a “Hail Mary” — one last chance to reinvent a brand that has struggled to find its identity since Ford sold it in 2008.

The 735kW sedan sounds extraordinary on paper. But paper is cheap. Engineering is expensive. And trust, once lost, is very hard to regain. Jaguar has 18 months to prove it can deliver on every single one of these promises. The clock is ticking.
