Kajol Reveals What It’s Like Working with Husband Ajay Devgn: ‘We’re Not Civilised, But We Have Boundaries’

MUMBAI, June 19, 2025 – Bollywood icon Kajol recently shared candid insights into her professional dynamic with husband Ajay Devgn while promoting her upcoming mythological horror film Maa, set for release on June 27, 2025. The film, produced by Ajay Devgn under Devgn Films, marks another collaboration for the power couple, who have been married for over 26 years. Known for their on-screen chemistry in films like Ishq and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Kajol offered a humorous and unfiltered take on what it’s like working together.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kajol described their on-set relationship as refreshingly direct. “We do talk about the rules of engagement at work. 90 per cent of the time, if he is going over the top, I just call him out on it, and he calls me out on it. We are not civilised, and we will not take it to the corner,” she said, laughing. She clarified, however, that their disagreements are rare due to infrequent collaborations—typically once every five years—and are kept in check by mutually respected boundaries. “It’s pretty much out there and a ‘free for all’ kind of thing, but no one crosses the line,” she added.

Kajol also praised Ajay’s hands-on approach as a producer during a conversation with IANS. “He is a really, really good producer. From scripting to VFX to music, he’s involved in every detail,” she said, highlighting his professionalism on Maa. Yet, in her signature witty style, she jokingly remarked to Times of India that Ajay “harassed me a lot” as a producer, before adding, “No, he was quite a wonderful producer.” She also shared a heartfelt moment where Ajay admired her ability to juggle roles as a mother, wife, and friend to their daughter, Nysa, saying, “You are so lucky. You manage all these roles naturally.”

The couple’s dynamic wasn’t without public scrutiny. At the Maa trailer launch, Ajay faced criticism for interrupting Kajol to answer a question about motherhood in the industry, prompting discussions about mansplaining. Kajol, however, maintained her professionalism, emphasizing her commitment to a polite and comfortable work environment on set. “I’m much humbler on sets than otherwise. It makes the environment more professional,” she noted.

Kajol and Ajay, married since February 24, 1999, have two children, Nysa and Yug, and have navigated their careers with mutual respect despite their contrasting personalities—Kajol’s vivacity complementing Ajay’s reserved demeanor. Their collaborations, though sporadic, continue to captivate audiences, with Maa promising a gripping portrayal of maternal strength, backed by Ajay’s production vision.
