Kendra Duggar Sobs in Jailhouse Calls After Losing Custody of Four Children Following Couple’s Shocking Arrests
“When you then take my babies from me” — a sobbing Kendra Duggar pleaded with husband Joseph Duggar not to trust anyone during a devastating jailhouse call, as the former “19 Kids and Counting” star disclosed she has lost custody of all four of her young children following the couple’s back-to-back arrests in two different states.
Kendra, 27, broke down repeatedly in March 23 and March 24 phone calls obtained by TMZ and People, revealing the emotional toll of separation from her kids amid a legal nightmare that includes child endangerment charges in Arkansas and Joseph’s child molestation charges in Florida.
The Jailhouse Calls: A Mother’s Anguish
In a March 24 call, Kendra could be heard sobbing as she told Joseph about the unbearable pain of losing custody. “I think Friday has probably been my hardest day, but that’s crazy to say because Wednesday was crazy hard,” she said. Then came the rawest confession: “But it’s just like, when you then take my babies from me, they were who I was just going to pour my life into.”
In another call, Kendra made her priorities crystal clear. “I’m fighting for the kids, and they’re my number one priority right now,” she told her husband. Joseph responded that he was “100% behind” her decision and agreed she “should be fighting for them the most.”
Kendra added a note of uncertainty about their future as a couple: “I just want you to know, through all of this, whatever happens, that’s who’s coming first. Then we’ll just see where the rest of it leads us and try to put the pieces together.”
The calls also revealed Kendra had hired her own attorney — and instructed Joseph not to share that information with anyone.
The Charges: Two States, Two Legal Nightmares
Kendra was arrested March 20 in Arkansas on four counts each of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree false imprisonment — eight charges total. Joseph faces the identical eight Arkansas charges.
A source close to the family told People that “the arrest was a result of a home inspection, and the door locks being on the exterior of the doors.” That detail suggests authorities found children potentially locked inside rooms from the outside — a finding that would explain both the endangerment and false imprisonment charges.
The couple’s four children, whose ages have not been publicly disclosed, were removed from Kendra’s custody following the March 20 arrest. It remains unclear where the children are now or who has temporary guardianship.
Joseph’s Florida Sex Abuse Case
The Arkansas charges are only half of Joseph’s legal crisis. The 31-year-old former TLC star was arrested March 18 in Arkansas — two days before Kendra — on charges stemming from an alleged incident in Florida.
Joseph faces charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and lewd and lascivious contact. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, authorities interviewed a 14-year-old girl who claimed Joseph had inappropriately touched her several times on a family vacation when she was nine years old.
The affidavit claimed Joseph confessed to the sexual abuse to the girl’s father after being confronted. Police officers in Arkansas then had the father call Joseph with a detective on the line, and Joseph reportedly admitted to the actions again.
During his first appearance in Bay County Court, Florida Judge Brantley Clark ordered Joseph held on $600,000 bond. He posted bail later that day. The judge instructed Joseph to have no contact with the alleged victim — including through any third party or social media — and to have no unsupervised contact with any minors under 18.
Family Statement and Denials
A spokesperson for the Duggar family told People that the Arkansas charges against the couple are “totally unrelated” to Joseph’s sex abuse case in Florida. The spokesperson added that Kendra “is not suspected or accused of participating in his alleged crime.”
No statement has been released by the family regarding the child endangerment charges or the custody removal.
The Duggar Pattern
Joseph Duggar gained fame on TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” the hit reality show that followed the ultra-conservative Arkansas family’s life with 19 children. The family has faced repeated legal scandals, most notably the 2021 conviction of eldest son Josh Duggar on child pornography charges. Josh is currently serving a 12-year federal prison sentence.
Amy Duggar King, Joseph’s cousin, previously told Fox News Digital that Joseph’s arrest exposes the family’s “toxic system” that “breeds secrecy.” She has been an outspoken critic of the family’s handling of past abuse allegations.
What Happens Next
Kendra remains free while fighting to regain custody of her four children. The Arkansas court will likely hold a hearing to determine whether the children can be returned to her care, what conditions must be met, and whether the endangerment allegations have merit.
Joseph faces two separate legal battles: the Arkansas child endangerment case alongside Kendra, and the Florida child molestation case that carries far more severe potential penalties. He has demanded a jury trial and pleaded not guilty to the Florida charges.
For Kendra, the immediate fight is clear: get her babies back. The jailhouse calls reveal a mother in anguish, trying to hold herself together while her world collapses. “Then we’ll just see where the rest of it leads us and try to put the pieces together,” she told Joseph. Those pieces may take years to reassemble.
