Lagos Govt appeals to doctors to suspend warning strike, assures ongoing resolution efforts

The Lagos State Government has appealed to the Medical Guild to suspend its three-day warning strike, which began on July 28, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., in protest of unilateral salary deductions described as “illegal and disrespectful” by the doctors. The strike, set to end on July 31, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., was prompted by deductions first implemented in April 2025 and resumed in July without prior notice, despite earlier agreements to maintain the status quo. The Medical Guild, led by Chairman Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, also demands the full payment of 12-month revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and has issued a 21-day ultimatum, threatening an indefinite strike if demands are unmet.

The government, through the Lagos State Ministry of Health, has expressed concern for healthcare workers’ welfare and assured the public that it is addressing the grievances with “utmost sincerity and urgency.” A conciliation committee, comprising representatives from both the government and the Medical Guild, is reviewing submitted documents to resolve the issues. The ministry emphasized Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to healthcare workers’ welfare and industrial harmony, urging doctors to halt the strike to allow ongoing negotiations to conclude. Contingency plans are in place to minimize disruptions to healthcare services during the strike.
