Northern Cyprus Flights

Northern Cyprus holidays often involve flying, especially if you choose a package holiday to Northern Cyprus. Independent travelers need to find their own flight.

Northern Cyprus is not allowed to accept direct flights, so all flights must first land in Turkey. Passengers on Turkish Airline flights will have to change flights at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. Then the ongoing flight is an internal flight. It pays for the connection time to study the airline schedule for Turkish Airlines flights, especially for outbound travel. Some days the wait for a connecting flight is only an hour, but on other days it can take up to four hours. Turkish Airlines flies to Manchester, Birmingham and London Stansted and Gatwick. Anadalujet, a low-cost carrier owned by Turkish Airlines, also flies from London Stansted, but to the other Istanbul airport on the Asian side, Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Passengers do not leave the aircraft, but after an appropriate wait, the flight is considered an internal flight and is allowed to continue to Northern Cyprus.

In the summer months Pegasus flies daily from London Stansted and weekly from Manchester. These flights stop at a designated airport in Turkey, wait for a while, and then take off for Ercan. Passengers going to Northern Cyprus do not leave the plane.

A new airline is planned for 2011 to replace the failed Northern Cyprus Turkish Airline. Atlas Jet can still operate flights

The airport in Northern Cyprus is known as both Ercan and Lefkosa and is located east of Lefkosa (Nicosia).

Due to the ease of crossing the border from the south, many visitors now use Larnaca Airport. Monarch flights fly to Larnaca from many UK airports, including Manchester, Birmingham, Luton and London Gatwick airports.

It usually takes less than an hour to reach the Metehan crossing point in Northern Cyprus. It is best to arrange a taxi from Northern Cyprus to pick you up at Larnaca airport.

EasyJet flies to Paphos airport but transfer times to a crossing point in Nicosia are a few hours and taxi fares are high.
