The Difference Between Rebuilding and Overhauling an…

There is a big difference between rebuilding an engine and repairing it.

When rebuilding an engine it is removed from the vehicle, disassembled, and the motor block is checked for the following:

  • cracks or broken components
  • excessive cylinder wear
  • crankshaft wear
  • position of connecting rods
  • camshaft position, and
  • Pistons are checked for size and condition of piston ring grooves.

The cylinder head or heads should be taken to an automotive machine shop to have the valves and valve seats properly replaced and any other problems addressed. If the motor has very high mileage or has overheating problems, most likely the motor will need to be bored, the crankshaft re-ground, the connecting rods possibly re-sized and the cam bearings replaced . If the motor needs to be bored, the old piston has to be clamped with the connecting rod and the new piston clamped in. The motor block needs to be thoroughly cleaned and kept clean during the assembly process. Keeping it as clean as possible during rebuild will have a positive effect on the life of the motor once it is assembled. Once the block preparation is done, a master parts kit, along with the proper piston and ring sizes, and rod and main bearing sizes, can be ordered for assembly of the motor. It’s always best to replace the old camshaft and lifters with a set of new camshafts and new lifters.

An overhauled engine is one in which all components have been removed from the engine, including the cylinder head, or head, and oil pan. The engine block is usually not removed from the vehicle. New piston rings and rod bearings are installed with the proper size corresponding to the piston size and rod journal size. It’s always a good idea to install a new oil pump as well. New gaskets should be used when reassembling the engine. Assembling the accessory, when done properly, includes a cylinder head preparation by a good automotive machine shop. Quality machine work on the cylinder heads assures quality performance from those heads. Most engine re-builders from automotive machine shops will tell you that rebuilding cylinder heads is one of the most important, if not the most important operation that can be performed in rebuilding automotive engines. If these guidelines are followed, the overall performance of your completed engine rebuild will be much better.
