ABUJA – In a significant boost to Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday commissioned ten new state-of-the-art medical infrastructure projects at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), marking a major milestone in the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the country.
The newly commissioned facilities, valued at approximately ₦35 billion, include a specialized cancer treatment center, a modern cardiac care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, a dialysis center, a mental health facility, an emergency trauma center, a diagnostic imaging complex, a medical research laboratory, a surgical training center, and a 200-bed general ward extension.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s dedication to addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges through strategic investments in medical infrastructure and human capital development.
“The health of our citizens is paramount to the prosperity of our nation,” President Tinubu stated. “These world-class facilities will not only improve access to quality healthcare for Nigerians but will also reduce medical tourism and help retain our talented medical professionals within the country.”
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, who accompanied the President, revealed that the projects were completed ahead of schedule and within budget, describing them as “a testament to the administration’s efficient utilization of resources for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.”
The Chief Medical Director of UATH, Professor Mohammed Bello, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, stating that the new facilities would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialized care and train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
“These investments will transform healthcare delivery at our institution and benefit millions of Nigerians who require specialized medical services,” Professor Bello said.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by key government officials, healthcare professionals, and community representatives, who lauded the initiative as a significant step toward improving Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.
President Tinubu also announced plans to replicate similar projects across the six geopolitical zones of the country as part of the administration’s broader healthcare reform agenda.
The newly commissioned facilities are expected to be fully operational within the next month, with specialized medical personnel already recruited to staff the various units.
