Tragic Incident in Verona: Woman Killed, Carabinieri Injured in Violent Encounter
Verona, Italy – August 13, 2025
A violent incident shook the quiet streets of Verona’s historic district late Tuesday evening, resulting in the death of a local woman and injuries to two carabinieri officers. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Marco Warely, allegedly stabbed a woman before engaging in a shootout with responding officers, leading to a tragic outcome.
According to Verona police reports, authorities received a distress call at approximately 9:15 PM from residents on Via Mazzini reporting a disturbance. Callers described a man, later identified as Warely, attacking a woman with a knife outside a local café. Responding carabinieri arrived within minutes to find Warely holding 29-year-old Giulia Rossi, a Verona native, at knifepoint.
Witnesses reported that Warely, appearing agitated, refused to comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon. “He was shouting, waving the knife, and wouldn’t let her go,” said Maria Conti, a bystander who witnessed the event. In a chaotic escalation, Warely allegedly stabbed Rossi in the chest before drawing a firearm and shooting at the officers. Two carabinieri sustained non-life-threatening injuries, one with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and another with minor shrapnel injuries.
The officers returned fire, striking Warely, who fled the scene on foot. Rossi was rushed to Ospedale Civile Maggiore, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Authorities launched a manhunt, apprehending Warely two hours later in a nearby alley, where he was found with severe wounds from the exchange. He is currently in critical condition under police custody.
Preliminary investigations suggest Warely and Rossi were acquainted, though the motive for the attack remains unclear. Police are exploring possible personal disputes or mental health factors, as neighbors described Warely as having displayed erratic behavior in recent weeks. “He was always quiet, but lately, he seemed troubled,” said Luca Bianchi, a resident of Warely’s apartment building.
The injured carabinieri, whose identities have not been released, are receiving treatment and are expected to recover. Italy’s Interior Ministry issued a statement condemning the attack and praising the officers’ swift response. “Our carabinieri put their lives on the line to protect our communities. This tragedy underscores the dangers they face daily,” the statement read.
Verona’s mayor, Elena Moretti, expressed condolences to Rossi’s family and called for calm as the investigation continues. A vigil is planned for Thursday evening in Piazza delle Erbe to honor Rossi, a beloved local artist known for her vibrant murals around the city.
The incident has reignited discussions about public safety and mental health resources in Italy, with local leaders urging increased support for crisis intervention programs. Authorities have assured residents there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Verona Polizia di Stato hotline. The investigation remains ongoing.
