Ilia Malinin wins 3rd world title after Olympic disappointment

Ilia Malinin Claims Third Consecutive World Title in Redemption Performance After Olympic Heartbreak

American figure skater Ilia Malinin bounced back strongly from his disappointing eighth-place finish at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics by winning his third straight world title at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, on March 28, 2026.

The 21-year-old “Quad God,” a four-time U.S. champion, delivered a commanding free skate score of 218.11 points for a total of 329.40, finishing nearly 23 points ahead of silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama of Japan (306.67). Shun Sato, also of Japan, took bronze with 288.54.

Malinin’s performance featured multiple clean quadruple jumps and even included his signature backflip, showcasing the composure and technical brilliance that had been missing during his Olympic free skate. The win marks the first time a men’s skater has claimed three consecutive world titles since Nathan Chen.

This victory provides clear redemption for Malinin, who entered the 2026 Olympics as a heavy favorite for individual gold but faltered in the free skate, finishing outside the medals despite helping the U.S. secure team gold. Just six weeks later, he returned to the top of the international podium with a mature and dominant showing.

Malinin now joins an elite group of American men with multiple world titles. His consistent excellence in the post-Olympic season has reaffirmed his status as one of the most technically gifted skaters in the world.

The result also secures important momentum for the U.S. figure skating program heading into the next Olympic cycle.

Fans and analysts praised Malinin’s mental resilience, noting how quickly he refocused after the Olympic setback. In Prague, he skated last in the free skate and rose to the occasion under pressure.

Congratulations poured in from across the skating community, with many highlighting his growth both on and off the ice.
