Kennedy Center Ex Officio Board Member Makes Bold Attempt to Eviscerate Trump’s Existence Days After Massive Layoffs

Rep. Joyce Beatty Sues to Remove Trump Name from Kennedy Center, Sparking Fresh Legal Battle Over Historic Landmark

A new legal challenge is intensifying the dispute over the future of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) asked a federal judge this week to force the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from the iconic building and halt related changes.

The motion, filed on March 25 or 26, 2026, argues that the board’s decision to rebrand the center as the “Trump-Kennedy Center” violates federal law. Congress established the venue in 1958 as a permanent living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and the statute specifically designates it as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — a name that can only be altered by Congress, according to Beatty’s legal team.

Trump’s name was physically added to the building’s facade in large letters shortly after the board — many of whose members were appointed by the president — voted in December 2025 to rename it “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” The change has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, arts organizations, and members of the Kennedy family.

Beatty, an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board, stated in the filing that trustees have a duty to preserve the center as a memorial to JFK and that adding another president’s name undermines its core purpose. “Can the Board of the Kennedy Center — in direct contradiction of the governing statutes — rename this sacred memorial to John F. Kennedy after President Donald J. Trump? The answer is, unequivocally, ‘no,’” the motion asserts.

The controversy escalated after Trump took a more active role at the center in his second term. The board voted to close the facility for a two-year renovation starting in July 2026, a move that has already led to staff layoffs beginning on March 26, 2026. Several high-profile artists have canceled performances, and ticketing platforms like StubHub have continued listing events under the traditional Kennedy Center name, creating branding confusion.

Kennedy family members have been vocal in their opposition. Maria Shriver, JFK’s niece, sarcastically suggested the shutdown was tied to declining interest following the name change. Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, criticized the effort and emphasized that the Kennedy legacy lives on through public action rather than physical signage.

Public reactions on social media have been divided and often heated. Some users praised Beatty’s lawsuit as a necessary defense of history, while others mocked the situation or warned of potential backlash. The debate has extended beyond politics into broader questions about legacy, presidential branding, and the independence of cultural institutions.

Supporters of the name addition and renovation argue that upgrades are long overdue and that recognizing Trump’s involvement in modernizing the facility is appropriate. Critics counter that the moves reflect an overreach that prioritizes personal branding over congressional intent and the center’s role as a national performing arts landmark.

The case now heads to federal court, where a judge will consider whether the board exceeded its authority. Separate lawsuits from cultural preservation groups are also challenging aspects of the planned closure and physical changes.

For many Americans, the Kennedy Center represents more than a venue — it stands as a symbol of the nation’s cultural heritage and a tribute to a pivotal moment in U.S. history. The ongoing legal fight raises important questions about who controls such national institutions and how their identities should be preserved or updated in a polarized era.

The situation remains fluid as the court weighs the arguments and the center prepares for its temporary shutdown.
