NHAI To Use 40,000 km of AI Dashcams To Hunt Down Potholes on National Highways – “No More Missed Defects.”

Potholes on India’s highways could soon become a thing of the past—or at least get flagged faster than ever. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) just announced a major tech upgrade: AI-powered dashcam analytics services (DAS) rolling out across roughly 40,000 km of national highways. Specialized high-res cameras on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) will scan roads weekly, with AI automatically spotting over 30 types of problems—including the dreaded potholes.

The announcement, dropped Friday by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, is already making waves. NHAI’s official X account posted about it, calling it a “major step towards technology-driven Operations and Maintenance.”

Here’s the kicker: this isn’t just about potholes. The system targets pavement issues like rutting, severe cracking, and surface damage. It also flags faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers, non-functional streetlights, encroachments, illegal median openings, overgrown vegetation, water stagnation, missing drainage covers, and even unauthorized signboards or parking.

RPVs—already patrolling highways—get upgraded with dashboard cameras for comprehensive weekly surveys. At least one nighttime inspection per month checks signage, reflectors, and lighting. Footage feeds into advanced AI and machine learning models trained to detect anomalies in real time.

A senior NHAI official quoted in reports said: “This data-driven approach enables faster repairs, predictive maintenance, and better road safety. Centralized dashboards will give us real-time visibility—no more waiting for complaints or manual checks.”

How the AI Dashcam System Works

  • Hardware: High-resolution dashcams mounted on patrol vehicles.
  • Frequency: Weekly full surveys + monthly night checks.
  • AI Detection: Over 30 defect categories, with heavy focus on pavement (potholes top the list).
  • Coverage: ~40,000 km of key national highways and expressways.
  • Benefits: Quicker fixes, reduced accidents from poor roads, improved user experience, and less reliance on human spotters.

The initiative builds on NHAI’s push for smarter infrastructure. With India’s highway network expanding rapidly, manual monitoring can’t keep up—especially during monsoons when potholes multiply overnight.

A veteran infrastructure reporter covering NHAI told us, “Potholes kill thousands yearly in India through accidents and delays. This AI layer could cut response times dramatically—spot a hole today, fix it next week instead of next month.”

But that’s not all—implementation details are still emerging. No exact rollout timeline beyond “soon, but sources suggest phased deployment starting with high-traffic corridors. It complements existing tools, such as FASTag monitoring and drone surveys, in some areas.

Critics note challenges: AI accuracy in bad weather, dust, or varying light; data privacy for incidental captures; and ensuring repairs are carried out swiftly after detections. Still, the potential upside for road safety is huge.

What this means for drivers: Smoother, safer highways ahead—if the system delivers. Fewer surprise potholes could mean fewer flat tires, lower repair bills, and fewer deadly crashes.

Final Thought NHAI’s AI dashcam push shows how tech can tackle age-old problems like potholes head-on. Covering 40,000 km with smart, automated eyes is ambitious—and overdue. If it works as promised, India’s highways could become much more reliable in the coming years.
