Plateau govt approves 159 mining firms to resume operations in the state

On May 23, 2025, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced that 159 mining operators have been cleared to resume operations in the state, following a suspension imposed in February 2025 via Executive Order 001. The suspension aimed to address illegal mining, insecurity, environmental degradation, and exploitation in the sector.

A Technical Committee, established to ensure compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and its 2011 Regulations, vetted and approved these operators. The cleared entities include 6 Mining Licenses, 15 Small-Scale Mining Leases, 15 Exploration Licenses, 5 Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Permits, 1 Quarry Lease, and 118 Tin Sheds/Buying Centers.

Non-compliant operators remain under suspension, with warnings of arrest and prosecution for violators, including those involving underage miners. Cleared operators must collect clearance letters from the Office of the Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development. The government also plans to establish a Gemstone Skills Acquisition Centre to train local youths in modern, sustainable mining practices, aiming to reform the sector for economic and community benefits.
