If you are trying to lose weight, your friends or well-wishers would have suggested at least one of the following: Extreme low-calorie diet Protein-rich diet Lots of salad Mono diet Frequent small meals Stomach stapling Diet pills Well, your answer to all the above should be a big NO! Instead, you should be saying a big YES to Yoga! Unlike most other weight loss programs that are partial and superficial in their approach, Yoga is an ancient Indian practice, which, when accompanied by the right kind of food, does magic. And this book shows you precisely that. Yoga and Diet for Weight Loss breaks all existing slimming and weight loss myths, and prescribes certain postures of Yoga, along with the diet one should take in order to achieve better and faster results.

A conversation with Bijoylaxmi Hota.

You have been practicing and teaching Yoga for few decades now. Do you see a change in the way modern Yoga has evolved over the years?

Yoga surely has evolved and more often than not, has become yet another form of physical exercises- a kind of physiotherapy. Although in its newer avatars too, yoga benefits, but not as much as the traditional yoga can do. Which is why in spite of the whole world practising it today, curable diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise.

You lay a lot of emphasis on diet combined with Yoga. Any specific reason for that?

It is because wrong food can negate yoga’s effect. For example, asthma is a mucus producing disease. If an asthmatic keeps taking more mucus producing food like curd and rice, he or she is not likely to get cured easily. Similarly, in cancer which is an acidic disease, if the patient continues ingesting acid producing substances, his or her condition is bound to aggravate.

That is why diet should be of utmost importance in any therapy.

Yoga has suddenly become a modern life style status symbol. In these times how do you differentiate between what is ‘correct’ and what is just a fad?

Yoga is authentic if all the rules and regulations laid down in the ancient texts by the yogis who had formulated this system are followed. With their superior intuitive knowledge they knew exactly how the subtle energies in the body behave with what element.

Weight loss and slimming is the theme of your book this time. Can you elaborate a little more on that?

Obesity is not just an aesthetic issue, it opens the gate for many health problems including some serious diseases. Unfortunately in today’s world almost everyone is overweight and to lose the extra kilos they are turning to methods that have the danger of ruining their health even earlier. The yogic method is not only effective, it is safe and makes the practitioner still healthier.

You take a more holistic approach towards Yoga. Can you elaborate on this?

Because even though a disease manifests on the body the cause is generally stress. Modern science too agrees that more than 90 percent of the diseases are stress related. This stress can be physical, mental, emotional or even karmic, and only holistic yoga can eliminate it effectively.
